Your Bible Lesson For The Day
Why Did Our Savior Jesus Christ Have To Be True Man To Save Us?
Have you ever been indebted to someone for saving your life? If so, you owe that person an everlasting debt of thanks and praise, right? Perhaps you are not aware of it, but you did have someone save your life – Christ the Son of God! And to save you, he also had to be a true man.
You see, according to God’s eternal plan for our salvation, our Savior Jesus was our substitute under the law of God. To be our substitute he had to be a true man, a human being just like we are, except without sin. Galatians 4:4,5 explains why our Savior the Son of God also had to be true man. The verse says: "God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law, that we might receive the adoption of sons." For what purpose was our Savior the Son of God born a human being under the law of God? To redeem us sinful people who were under God’s law that demanded we be perfect and that threatened us with eternal punishment in hell for being imperfect sinners who broke God’s law.
To redeem us sinners as our human substitute, our Savior had to obey God’s law perfectly for us. Then his perfect righteousness would be credited to us. And he did fulfill the law of God perfectly for us! Hebrews 4:15 tells us that Christ Jesus was “tempted in every respect in the same way we are, but without sin.” Jesus never committed a sin, as he himself asserted when he told the Jews, “Who of you can convict me of sin?”
What is more, to redeem us sinners, our Savior had to be our human substitute so that our sins against God could be charged against him and he could suffer the punishment for our sins – death. And he did die for our sins! Hebrews 2:9 says, “We see Jesus, who had been made inferior to the angels for a little while, crowned with glory and honor because of suffering death, in order that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.”
So why did our Savior Jesus Christ have to be true man as well as the true Son of God to save us? Because he had to obey the law perfectly for us and to suffer and die for our sins as our human substitute. Then his perfect righteousness would be credited to us and our sins would be paid for and forgiven. For having done these saving deeds for us, we owe Christ Jesus our everlasting thanks and praise. He saved our lives eternally!
