What Is A Good Work?
What is a good work? Since different individuals have different ideas of what is a good work, who is to finally say what it is? God. He is the final judge. So look at God’s Word to discover what he says is good and pleasing in his sight.
Hebrews 11:6 says, “Without faith it is impossible to please God.” According to this verse faith in God is required for something to be a good work in his sight.
The apostle Paul said in Galatians 2:20, “. . . the life that I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God.” A good work done by faith in God includes doing it as a fruit of faith in the Son of God, Jesus Christ.
1 John 5:3 says, “This is love for God, that we keep observing his commandments.” Another key ingredient of a good work is that it is done in keeping with God’s commandments to express one’s love for God.
And Psalm 33:8 tells us what is also important in the sight of God. “Let all the earth fear the Lord; Let all the inhabitants of the world revere him.” An important part of what is a good work in the sight of God is that it is done to fear, or to honor, him.
Pulling the above points together, how can you define a good work? It is whatever is done to fear and love God as a fruit of faith in him and his Son Jesus Christ that is in keeping with his commandments.
