In What Ways Was Our Savior Jesus Christ Exalted?
Jesus said, “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” These words of Jesus are always true. People who in their sinful pride exalt themselves will be humbled by the Lord. These words of Jesus proved to be very true in his own case. He humbled himself to save us, and God then exalted him as our Savior. In what ways was our Savior Jesus Christ exalted? Look at what the following verses say.
1 Peter 3:18-20 tell us, “Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous One in place of the unrighteous ones, in order to bring you to God, on the one hand having been put to death in flesh but having been made alive in spirit; in which also he went and preached to the spirits in prison, who at one time were unbelieving when the patience of God continued to wait expectantly in the days of Noah while the ark was being built.” These verses tell us that Jesus’ body was made alive again and resurrected as a spiritual, glorified body, such as Paul described in 1 Corinthians 15:42-44. In that spiritual, glorified body Jesus then descended into hell to proclaim to the spirits there his victory over the devil, sin, death and hell. So in what way was our Savior exalted? In his descent into hell.
1 Corinthians 15:20 states, “Christ has been raised from the dead, the first-fruits of those who have fallen asleep.” In what way, according to this verse, was our Savior exalted? In his resurrection from the dead.
Luke 24:51 tells us that after his resurrection from the dead he was “taken up into heaven.” What, then, was another way in which Jesus Christ was exalted? In his ascension into heaven.
In Matthew 16:27 Jesus said, “For the Son of Man is about to come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and at that time he will pay back each one according to his deeds.” And Acts 10:42 states, God appointed him to judge the living and the dead.” So in what way will our Savior Jesus Christ be exalted? In his coming in glory to judge the living and the dead.
Ephesians 1:20-23 inform us of some additional ways in which God exalted our Savior Jesus Christ: “(God) raised (Jesus)from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms high above all rule and authority and power and dominion and every name that is named not only in this age but also in the age to come. And God put all things under his feet, and gave him as head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.” According to these verses God seated Jesus at his right hand, which means God put Jesus in the position of divine authority to rule over all things for the benefit of his church of believers. And now the exalted and glorified Jesus fills all things with his divine power and glory.
So in what ways was our Savior Jesus Christ exalted? In numerous ways. In his descent into hell. In his resurrection from the dead. In his ascension into heaven. In being named Judge of the living and the dead. In his being seated at the right hand of God. In filling all things with his divine power and glory. This being true, let us bow down to praise and glorify him who has been exalted over all.
