Your Bible Lesson For The Day
How Was The Savior Jesus Christ Like Everyone Else?
If you are a sports fan, you probably know that sportscasters often talk about the depth of the teams. By the depth of a team they mean the team's reserves, substitute players who can come into a game and play in place of the regular players. The substitute is just like the regular player. He wears the same uniform, can play the same position, and can do what the regular player does.
In the kingdom of God our Savior Jesus Christ was our substitute. To be our substitute he had to be like us, in order to take our place under the law of God to save us. How was the Savior Jesus Christ like you and everyone else--with one exception?
Hebrews 2:14 says, "Since the children have shared in and continue to share in flesh and blood, he himself also in just the same way partook of the same human characteristics, in order that by means of death he might deprive of his power the one who holds the power of death, that is the devil." Because we children of God share in flesh and blood, to be our substitute and Savior Jesus Christ partook of our same human characteristics we have. He was just like us physically. The New Testament Scriptures tell us that he had a human body of flesh and blood and bones with hands and feet and a head like we have. He was born and grew up into adulthood like we did. He became hungry and thirsty as we have. He ate, drank, slept and wept as we do. What is more, he suffered, died, and was buried as happens to us human beings. And he was just like us in every other way: He had a will of his own, a soul, an intellect, and emotions.
Humanly speaking, Jesus was just like we are, with one exception--he was without sin. Hebrews 4:15 says, "We do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every respect in the same way we are, but without sin."
So now you know that your Savior Jesus Christ was just like you and everyone else, except he was without sin.
