A couple of anecdotes about my book Deepening Love -- For Marital Happiness: It was first published in 1992 by Northwestern Publishing House. It was printed three times before being allowed to go out of print. I have now republished it. It is available as both an ebook and a paperback at the Kindle Store and Amazon books.
The book was used by congregations with their members for marital and premarital counseling. One instance of this that quickly comes to mind is a telephone conversation I had with one of the pastors of those congregations, who served a relatively large church. He told me, "Your book is my congregation's Bible on the subject of marriage!" Some years ago one of my granddaughters got married. She and her fiancee attended premarital counseling sessions at her church in Minnesota. The pastor gave them a gift from their congregation for their forthcoming wedding; it was a copy of Deepening Love -- For Marital Happiness. My granddaughter exclaimed to her pastor, "Oh! my grandpa wrote this book!" This surprised the pastor to no end and they laughed about the coincidence. My book was also used at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary as a reference book for the seminary students to read to instruct them about marriage in preparation for marital and premarital counseling during their ministries. A few of the students contacted me about the book and marriage. I also received some telephone calls and emails from pastors after I retired asking me if I would share with them my premarital counseling materials, which were developed around the use of Deepening Love -- For Marital Happiness. Those premarital counseling materials are the basis of the premarital documents shown on the Wedding Page of Christian Inconnect. So I can indeed assure you that my book has served its purpose well. I hope it may be of value to you as well. Rev JC

What is Deepening Love -- For Marital Happiness about?
See its Preface and Table of Contents below. |
Preface:
The information and encouragement in this book need to be understood in this light: building a mutually pleasing marriage as God planned it is an important part of living your life under Christ. The Holy Spirit begins the discussion of the roles of Christian husbands and wives in Ephesians 5 by saying they are to arrange themselves under or submit to one another out of reverence for Christ (Ephesians 5:21). As a fruit of your faith in Christ, then, you will desire to make your marriage all that he says it should be to glorify him.
Since Christian couples want to glorify Christ through their married life, they are looking for biblically sound information to guide them in improving their marriage. They realize that no one knows more about marriage, about husbands and wives, and about what will bring about happiness in marriage than the Lord who has made them and has instituted marriage.
You may already be married, or you may be planning to be married soon. In either case, you are probably looking for scriptural information on marriage, or you would not be reading this book.
The purpose of this book is threefold: to share with you what our Lord has said about the marital relationship, to bring to you the Lord's guidance for working through the chief marital problems, and to unfold for you what our Lord has said about love in marriage.
Let me share this encouragement with you as well: if you and your spouse have had, or are beginning to have marital problems, in addition to reading this book seek help from a Christian counsellor. The sooner you get help, the easier it will be for you to resolve your problems. Too many couples do not seek help until their feelings of love have long evaporated in the heat of their marital confrontations and failures. Clearing up their problems and reawakening feelings of love are then difficult for them.
It is my prayer that this book may serve in the kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Bridegroom of the church, to assist Christian couples in building a mutually pleasing marriage that honors him. May this book glorify him who alone can enable us to be God-fearing husbands and wives.
